I reluctantly spend too much time at a job when a day off is only experienced once in a span of weeks or months, and I come home tonight to read the interesting responses generated by my previous post.
A question of “why?” was almost formed in one response … perhaps it was nothing more than a thoughtless judgement that making sims machinima is an odd way to give thanks to the creators of custom content.
So, why do I make sims machinima?
It’s been a question asked in many forms on a number of threads scattered throughout the message boards of the sims community.
Perhaps it was too obvious to me, and therefore I didn’t feel I should state the obvious, that of course making these films is something I enjoy doing. When we speak in terms of doing things that we don’t have to do, aren’t required to do. then it stands to reason we do these things because we enjoy doing them. But, to expend my limited and valuable time on making films as an enjoyment without any meaningful purpose would leave me feeling shallow.
It all began rather simply. Making films was something Michelle and I could do together, since having thousands of miles between us leaves us with an extremely limited assortment of “things to do together”. We had become disenchanted by the griefing associated with online gaming, and basically we needed something to do, and I said, “Why don’t we try our hand at making machinima … and we could showcase the custom content we’ve been using in our sims games.”
There are many of us who don’t create to “express ourselves”, but rather to share an extension of ourselves with others … to make a connection. Sometimes it’s not enough to just create … it’s not complete until it’s shared.
Every time we are asked from what site a particular custom item can be found, every time a custom content creator tells us how proud they are to have their items in our films, every time a creator is thrilled to take time to make something specially for our films, then my need for purpose is answered.
