Michelle and Kheri Do Canada!

January 20th, 2007 by Michelle

As some of our friends know, last Saturday I left the UK for a trip to Edmonton, Canada and Kheri travelled up from Tennessee to keep me company, which was pretty amazing of her. Finally, after four years of knowing each other online, we met in person for the first time last Saturday evening at Edmonton Airport. It was the first time in Canada for both of us. After my eighteen hour trip from London, I found Kheri anxiously waiting for me next to baggage reclaim. She seemed a little shorter than I imagined her (she still claims she’s 5ft 4in next to my 5ft 3in, but I could definitely see over the top of her head!).

Kheri & Michelle checking out the local bars. Kheri only *looks* taller here, because we were sitting down ;)

As, for Edmonton, it has the friendliest people I’ve encountered abroad and everyone I met couldn’t have been nicer. I’ve never seen so much snow in my life, but, practically every day was bright and sunny, the complete opposite to the grey skies and drizzle back in the U.K.

Sadly, we didn’t get to see the actual snow fall, but it was a real treat to see the beautiful, large pine trees dotted everywhere covered with snow and in some cases dressed with lights left over from Christmas decorations and the rooftops covered in snow.

Being a typical Brit, I discovered The British Import shop in the mall, owned by a Scottish ex-pat. Unluckily (or lucky) for Kheri they had just sold out of Marmite..for anyone that doesn’t know, it’s a popular spread made from yeast extract that goes on toast and butter.

Kheri bought me my first root beer (ummm…never again!) and I bought her the first cappuncino she’s ever had and we shared the best calamari either of us has ever tasted in the hotel restaurant where we were staying.

Five days was definitely too short a time to spend in such a wonderful city. Lots more I could write about if I wasn’t so jet lagged…maybe another time, but I’ll just say a huge thanks to everyone that made me so welcome, I had the BEST time :)

    LMAO OK, OK …
I have decided to settle the “dispute of who’s taller” once and for all …
(getting tape measure … standing against wall … marking the spot …)
hehe … WOOHOOOOO! I am taller, I am taller, I am taller …
5 FEET 4 INCHES (pokes out tongue)
OK, but truth be told … I used to be 5′4.5”, so I have lost half an inch … STILL … I AM TALLER! roflmao

Kheri, you must be forgetting that I know you need a new prescription for your glasses ;).

Canada is a great country to visit, I’ve only been to Ontario but I found the people there very friendly :)

It sounds like you both had a good time and it must have been great to have finally met each other after working on so many films together :)

Brrrrr…hope you both had warm jackets. Thanks for letting us know what your trip was like. I’m glad you both finally got to meet each other. Sounds like you had an excellent time together.

Although I’ve never been to Edmondon, Vancouver is one of my favorite cities in the world.

I just can’t get over that picture from the hotel window. Damn, that looks freaking cold…I miss it…LOL! :)

Yes, we did have warm jackets (and scarves and gloves)! I miss it too Jule, I’d take the sunny, cold weather over the grey, gloomy weather here in the U.K anyday :(

[…] Canada, fast becoming the Holy Land for machinimators, recently saw a pilgrimage visit from Michelle and Kheri, allowing them to meet in person for the first time. Pretty neat to meet someone in person whom you’ve known online for a time. I trust they’re having a grand time up there, sounds like they are. […]

Wow you guys were actually here? I live in Edmonton! Did you guys manage to visit West Edmonton Mall? That place is huge. Anyways, I’m a big fan of your Sims music videos. Keep ‘em coming! I learned a lot from your tutorials. Thank you!!

Glad you found the tutorial helpful, Kristine! We did manage to visit the mall on the second day. Neither of us could believe how big it was and we were amazed at the fantastic water park inside!!

Hey! What didn’t you like about root beer?

Nice site, by the way. And I echo Kristine’s comments. Your tutorial section is jam packed.

*shudders at just the thought of root beer*…the taste mainly, Fleef ;).But, Kheri loves it and she made sure none was wasted, it’s a good thing it’s non-alcoholic!

So I guess a root beer float is not on the menu either. :)

As far as Canada goes, I attended an expo in Toronto back in the early nineties - also during the winter. The trip was great, especially the part where I got to visit the Red Firehouse where Second City originated. Ahh, the Great White North.
